About this piece

Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868-1930 by Larry Frank 1990

We’re honored to release the first drop from the 4KINSHIP Studio Library — a curated collection of vintage and gently used books gathered over decades of research, travel, design, and lived experience.

These titles have shaped our thinking. They’ve informed our dye practices, textile studies, Indigenous design ethics, land-based storytelling, and our broader creative journey. Some are rare. Some are well-loved. All have been part of the foundation of what became 4KINSHIP.

As we thoughtfully downsize our archives, we’re excited to pass these phenomenal reads forward — into new studios, homes, classrooms, and creative spaces.

May they inspire you the way they inspired us.
May they be used, referenced, dog-eared, and loved again.

A landmark volume celebrating the historic silver and turquoise jewelry of the Navajo and Pueblo peoples.

Featuring more than 300 exceptional pieces — many drawn from museum storerooms and private collections — this richly illustrated book traces the evolution of Southwest silverwork from 1868, when the Navajo returned to their homeland, through 1930, when tourism and mass production began to reshape the craft.

Larry Frank explores early design influences from Spanish, Mexican, and Plains traditions; documents Navajo tools and techniques developed under conditions of hardship; and highlights the Pueblo contribution, particularly the sophisticated use of turquoise. His detailed dating sequence and stylistic analysis offer valuable insight for collectors and scholars alike.

With 253 close-up photographs (52 in color), including rare historical images of Indigenous people wearing the jewelry, this volume is both visual archive and critical study.

An essential reference for jewelers, collectors, historians, and anyone studying Southwestern material culture.
